A Day in the Life of a Family Medicine Resident (PGY1–3)

PGY1 (Intern Year)

The day typically begins early with pre-rounding on hospitalized patients, reviewing overnight events, labs, and vital signs. Morning rounds with the attending focus on developing clinical reasoning and care plans. Interns spend much of the day managing inpatient care, such as placing orders, coordinating with consultants, and communicating with patients and families. Afternoons may include cross-cover responsibilities. The day often ends with sign-out and preparation for the next day. On ambulatory days, interns begin building their continuity clinic with longer visit times and close supervision.

PGY2

As second-year residents gain confidence, their role shifts toward greater autonomy and leadership. On inpatient services, PGY2s supervise interns and medical students while refining diagnostic and management skills. Outpatient time expands, with more efficient clinic sessions and a growing continuity panel. Residents may participate in specialty clinics, home visits, or dedicated rotations such as geriatrics or reproductive health. Teaching becomes a more prominent part of the day, both informally on rounds and during didactics.

PGY3

Senior residents function with a high level of independence, preparing for unsupervised practice. They lead inpatient teams, oversee clinical decision-making, and mentor junior residents. In the outpatient setting, PGY3s manage a robust continuity panel with increasing efficiency and complexity. Time is also devoted to electives, career development, and leadership roles within the program.

Throughout all years, residents participate in weekly didactics, interdisciplinary collaboration, and longitudinal patient care—reflecting the full scope of family medicine across the lifespan.

Resident Wellness

Each resident is also paired with a dedicated faculty advisor who provides ongoing mentorship and active support, particularly when challenges may arise.
