Mission
The Capital Health Family Medicine Residency Program is dedicated to training patient-centered, community-focused, and systems-oriented family physicians who are prepared to lead and improve health in urban and suburban communities. We foster a supportive learning environment that values individual learning styles and prioritizes resident well-being.
Our program is committed to advancing access, quality, and equity in health care throughout Mercer County. We achieve this through comprehensive primary care, coordinated care across the continuum, and meaningful partnerships with the diverse communities and organizations we serve.
Overview
Academics – – The residency has a structured three-year program incorporating traditional lectures and innovative didactics, including (but not limited) to case-based discussions, lectures, workshops, and simulations.
Hospital Training – Capital Health is a two-hospital system accredited by the DNV with a state-designated level II trauma center, a state-designated regional perinatal care center, a level III neonatal intensive care unit, and more. Currently our residents rotate at Capital Health Medical Center - Hopewell for their inpatient and specialty services rotations.
Ambulatory Training – Capital Health Primary Care – Brunswick Avenue, located in Trenton, New Jersey, is a welcoming, patient-centered practice designed to care for the diverse local community. Using a team-based care model, our resident- faculty group practice provides comprehensive care to patients in all stages of life including preventive well visits and acute sick visits, gynecologic services, and office-based procedures. In addition to primary care within the office, on-site ancillary services include behavioral health, social work, and laboratory services.
Community – Mercer County is home to a racially, ethnically, and culturally diverse population that is cared for by clinicians at multiple Capital Health sites. Many of our patients are high-risk, with significant socioeconomic challenges, including limited health literacy and low income. We collaborate closely with community partners, such as the Trenton Health Team, which promotes the health and well-being of the greater Trenton community, and Homefront, an organization committed to ending homelessness.
Research – All residents will graduate with a peer-reviewed publication and/or scholarly presentation accomplished with faculty mentorship. Residents also have the opportunity to attend and present at local and national conferences including the New Jersey Academy of Family Physicians (NJAFP), the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM). Wellness – Capital Health takes physician well-being seriously and has Wellness Committees at multiple levels of the organization, including Capital Health Medical Group, the Graduate Medical Education Department, and within the Family Medicine Residency Program. Each is focused on improving and maintaining the well-being of clinicians in our provider community. The Wellness Committee has an annual budget to organize retreats and other wellness activities.
